Pets and bringing them into Spain
What are the procedures for bringing a pet into Spain?
For those people wishing to bring their pet to Spain, certain requirements must be complied with. Specifically, they must possess a certificate of good health for their animal, specifying that it has been fully vaccinated (particularly against rabies) at least one month prior to arrival in Spain. As to the transportation of animals from the country of origin, this depends upon the airline concerned. In general, if the animal weighs less than 6 kilos it can travel in the cabin (provided it is suitably caged). If the animal weighs in excess of 6 kilos it must travel in the baggage compartment.
Dependent upon the size and weight of the animal the airline will insist on a certain size of cage. As to the cost, this varies and depends upon the distance being traveled and the weight of the animal. The cost can vary from €6.00 to €9.00 per kilo. This applies to all EU countries with the exception of the United Kingdom. It should be noted that although animals may be taken out of the U. K. with the relevant certificates, pets being returned to the UK from another country must have been out of the UK for a period of 6 months. Upon the return the animal must have been kept up to date with all its vaccinations on its ´Pets Passport´. The penalties for failing to comply with this regulation in the U. K. are severe. For more information you should contact the Department of Agriculture in Preston, Lancashire or speak to your Vet.
There are a number of veterinary clinics along the Costa del Sol, some of these have 24-hour emergency service.
